Techfluff.tv - The UK tech scene delivered with a wink

After a couple of episodes, it’s becoming clear that Techfluff.TV is in many respects the UK’s answer to Pop17 and RocketBoom. Every week TechFluff delves into the world of web-celebrities and tech startups, particularly the London scene right now, but increasingly across Europe (if the Le Web video is anything to go by). What’s fun about TechFluff is that it doesn’t take the industry… Continue reading

Fear Kills Businesses, Dead

It’s official. We’re in a recession. Recessions naturally inject fear and panic, which is only heightened by every discussion of market losses, layoffs, bailouts, and somber predictions. We’re only human after all; of course everything affects us personally and emotionally.

Fear is not a catalyst for productivity however.

With valuable advice pouring in from concerned and sympathetic entrepreneurs and proven leaders, businesses… Continue reading

The Ning Exodus Begins: Adult Networks, It’s Time To GTFO

The eviction of Ning’s adult sites is in full swing. The actual shut down of the sites doesn’t happen until January 5 (extended from January 1), but the sites that are affected have now received an email with instructions on how to get their content off Ning.

Ning CEO Gina Bianchini says only about 1% of the 675,000 networks are being asked to leave for having adult… Continue reading

MOG Music Network Pushes Back Affiliate Payments, Are They In Trouble?

When music blog network and discovery platform MOG launched an advertising network last August, CEO David Hyman described it as a “Federated Media for music sites” (note: we partner with FM for TechCrunch). Dubbed MOG Music Network, it allows independent music bloggers to syndicate content to Mog.com and customize ads that appear on their websites, enabling them to generate revenues greater than what they’d get… Continue reading

Digg’s Sorry Revenue Stream, And Rumors Of An Experimental Ad Product

So Business Week gets their hands on Digg’s financials and reports that the company had 2007 revenues of $4.8 million and losses of $2.8 million. The first three quarters of 2008 Digg had revenues of $6.4 million and losses of $4 million. That implies total 2008 revenue of $8.5 million, with $5.3 million in losses.

First of all, ouch. People close to Digg once suggested to me that… Continue reading

MobileCrunch Interviews Tracy DeMiroz, VP of Marketing at Skyfire

I spent a few minutes earlier this week chatting with Tracy DeMiroz, the VP of Marketing for Skyfire. Skyfire is a free mobile browser for Windows Mobile and Symbian, and the only browser of the bunch to support Flash, Silverlight, and a number of other technologies generally reserved for desktop browsers.

With Skyfire now open to the world and quickly approaching a… Continue reading

Smule Shares Its Awesome Audio Technology To Bring Cigarettes To Your iPhone

Smule, the company behind innovative applications like the Sonic Lighter and Ocarina, is easily one of my favorite developers on the App Store. The company has developed a suite of advanced technologies revolving around audio information, which allows it to share music on a global scale and (in the case of an app launching today) to use audio to relay information between two… Continue reading

MySpace Puts The Hammer Down On Project Playlist

MySpace is getting back into the business of blocking third party widgets, it seems - today they’ve banned embedded music widgets from the fast growing Project Playlist. But unlike previous 2006 and 2007 blocks of iMeem, Photobucket and many others, this time MySpace is doing it under threat of litigation from the major labels.

We first got word from MySpace users that their Playlist widgets are… Continue reading

Burger King Launches A Perfume That Smells Like Meat. Crispin Porter Must Be Behind this.

Burger King launched a new brand of perfume today called Flame by BK. “The Whopper sandwich is America’s favorite burger. Flame by BK captures the essence of that love and gives it to you. Behold the scent of seduction, with a hint of flame-broiled meat.”

My guess is that the controversial advertising agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky is behind the new perfume, which apparently is actually… Continue reading

Synthasite Buys ClickPass. I See Zero Synergies.

Easy site building service Synthasite, which we first covered way back in 2006, has acquired Y Combinator startup Clickpass, which launched earlier this year.

There are no details on the purchase price or terms of the deal. Synthasite has raised $5 million in capital, Clickpass just raised the Y Combinator seed round.

The press release talks about theoretical synergies between the companies, specifically that… Continue reading
